An entrepreneur who practices corporate philanthropy within the Chicago community, rigger Michael Reed is the founder of Reed Rigging. He began his career in tour support as a lighting technician and designer in the late 1970s. By 1990, he decided to transition to working as a rigger, and in 1993 he established his current firm to address the needs of the regional event trade. In the two decades since, his company has provided safe, effective rigging services for clients including several Fortune 500 companies. Most recently, Michael Reed and his firm served as contractors for the 2012 NATO Summit, which required the provision of a safe environment for numerous international dignitaries.
In addition to his commercial endeavors, Mr. Reed has donated services and made equipment loans to numerous deserving organizations over the years. Some of these include the Chicago AIDS Walk, Uptown Chicago Children’s Theater Program, and the United Center’s 9/11 Memorial. Dedicated to the furtherance of safety practices within his field, Mr. Reed also serves as a subject-matter expert for the Entertainment Technician Certification Program (ETCP) Arena Rigging exam. Every rigger working for his firm is required to pass this exam or an alternate version for theater rigging.
When not engaged in professional or charitable pursuits, Michael Reed enjoys cycling, writing, and performing.
